The Power of Onlyness

Nilofer Merchant

Fellow, The Martin Prosperity Institute

Nilofer Merchant

Nilofer Merchant

“Onlyness” probably isn’t a word you think of often. In fact, it isn’t actually a word at all. But that hasn’t stopped Nilofer Merchant from using her coined term as she teaches executives how to make our ideas powerful enough to dent the world. She says power has long been seen as vertical, tied to an organization, rank, or influencers, and observed that at the intersection of power and opportunity lies “onlyness.” It’s a way for anyone and perhaps everyone to count and make a difference. Called by some as the “Jane Bond of Innovation” for her 20-plus years helping Fortune 500s and Silicon Valley startups grow products and sales, you’ll learn the secrets to her mega-successful entrepreneurial and innovative ways that leave her highly sought for her product strategy advice.

Bio:
Based in Silicon Valley, Merchant’s experience ranges from working with Steve Jobs at Apple to defeating Microsoft in an epic industry battle and advising the C-Suites of GE, IBM, Logitech, and more. She has personally launched more than 100 products that, in total, have netted 18 billion dollars. It’s no wonder that companies turn to her for guidance on the social era, how to design new product strategies, enter new markets, defend against competitors, and optimize revenues.

Her famed TED Talk, titled, “Got A Meeting? Take A Walk” has been seen by over 2 million viewers to date. The talk posits that “sitting is the new smoking,” and encourages sedentary office workers to be both healthy and productive by walking, rather than sitting, at meetings.

In 2013, Merchant received the Thinkers50 “Future Thinker Award,” beating out a crowd of seven other internationally notable management thinkers on the shortlist. To put this in context, Clay Christensen is the top management thinker of the day, and Nilofer of the future. In 2015, she was shortlisted for the Digital Thinkers award, recognizing her ability to turn zeros and ones into insights that matter.
