Opening Keynote
Rocket Men. To Infinity and Beyond!
Captains Mark and Scott Kelly, NASA Astronauts
Sunday, August 14
8:30–10:00 a.m.
Told through a kind of awe-inspiring imagery never captured before, Mark and Scott Kelly will candidly reflect on the experiences and lessons that shaped their views on teamwork, leadership, risk taking how they learned to face and overcome adversities, and their personal strategies for adapting to change. From NASA’s Twin Study and Scott’s Year in Space, to flying in combat and personal reflections on dealing with tragedy, to entertaining stories only a sibling could (or would) reveal, the Kelly brothers’ perspective and lessons will leave audiences doubly inspired and motivated.
Scott Joseph Kelly, with a bachelor’s in electrical engineering and a master’s in aviation systems, and Mark Edward Kelly, with a bachelor’s in marine engineering and transportation and a master’s in aeronautical engineering, are American astronauts from Orange, NJ and the only identical twins to have traveled in space. Scott and Mark became pilots in the U.S. Navy in 1987 and 1989, Mark flying 39 combat missions during the Persian Gulf War, and began their astronaut training in August 1996. Scott first flew into space as the pilot of the space shuttle Discovery; Mark’s first spaceflight was as pilot of the space shuttle Endeavour. In March, Scott completed the longest stint that any American has spent in orbit spending a year at the International Space Station. A special part of the mission was the NASA Twins Study, in which Scott was compared with the earthbound Mark to understand the medical effects of long spaceflight, such as astronauts would experience on a yearlong flight to Mars.
