The Only in Black Nashville Tour will explore Black history in Music City, and the significant and influential role that African Americans have played in the growth and development of Nashville. The story of Nashville has been shaped by some of the city’s biggest icons, starting with the 150-year-old Fisk Jubilee Singers, who pioneered early music here and are the reason why Music City was given its now internationally known nickname. Students from the city’s four Historically Black Colleges and Universities sparked a nonviolent movement to challenge racial segregation – which lead to Nashville becoming the first city in the deep south to begin desegregating public facilities. The National Museum of African American Music, the only institution of its kind in the world, opened in 2021 and encourages visitors to discover the central role African Americans have played in shaping and creating all genres of American music.
